Kenya Safari vs Tanzania Safari: Which is Better?

Two of Africa's greatest safari destinations, side by side — here's our honest 12-year comparison.

The Short Answer

Both are extraordinary. Tanzania wins on sheer volume of wilderness and parks. Kenya wins on accessibility, diversity, and cultural experience. Most serious safari travelers eventually do both.

If you're choosing just one for a first safari — Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater combination is arguably the world's finest single safari circuit. But Kenya's Maasai Mara during peak Migration (July–October) is the most dramatic concentrated wildlife experience on the planet.

Wildlife Comparison

Kenya and Tanzania share the same migration ecosystem — 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 350,000 gazelle circulate between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara on an annual cycle.

Kenya's Wildlife Advantage

The Maasai Mara's famous river crossings are more concentrated and dramatic than Tanzania's Grumeti crossings. Kenya also offers Amboseli for Kilimanjaro-backdrop elephant photography and Samburu for rare northern species.

Tanzania's Wildlife Advantage

The Serengeti is significantly larger (14,750 sq km vs 1,500 sq km in the Mara) with more wildlife and lower visitor density. Ngorongoro Crater is unique — a natural enclosure with extraordinary wildlife concentration including black rhino.

Cost Comparison

Kenya is generally more accessible and slightly less expensive for budget and mid-range travelers. Tanzania's park fees are higher (USD 60–80 per day vs Kenya's USD 40–70), and Tanzania's wilderness camps tend to command premium prices.

However, Tanzania's scale and quality of wilderness frequently justifies the higher cost for those who prioritize the depth of the safari experience.

Our Recommendation

First time: Kenya — more accessible, excellent English-speaking guides, and the Maasai Mara delivers the full safari fantasy. Add the coast in Mombasa for a perfect combination trip.

Second time or serious enthusiast: Tanzania's Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Zanzibar circuit — then extend to Mahale Mountains for chimpanzee trekking or Selous for boat safaris.

Dream trip: Both. Fly Kenya to Tanzania or vice versa and follow the Migration on its full journey.
